Felt Crafts

Hello Blogland! Hope you are all having a nice Summer...it sure is going by fast!  Before you know it we will be back to our regular weekly meetings! I am not ready yet! LOL

Today I would like to share with you some felt crafts that I had made over the years.  I love working with felt.  It is inexpensive, comes in a wide variety of colours, and is easy to work with.   Awhile ago I was into making felt books {ABC's and Number books} so I have quite a few felt scraps and felt sheets leftover. There are so many fab colours and printed felt available now...neon colours, glittered, embossed patterns, sticky backed felt...I just may have to start a new felt book soon!

This is the cover that I had created for our Brownie Scrapbook.
{check out the link to "Lee Ann's Girl Guide Notebook" website to see the actual pages that the Owls and Brownies worked on together}.

The scrapbook is a regular binder covered with fabric.

I made the owl, trefoil logo, and the toadstool from felt and used tacky glue to adhere them.

The felt letters and satin flowers & insects were purchased from a dollar store.

I had used the same owl and toadstool patterns that I had made for the scrapbook and dollar store letters on this felt covered cigar box turned Memory Box. {we used orange felt since the former Brownie uniform was orange}.
Again, I used my owl pattern and created a magnetic note holder.  The felt owl is attached to a clothespin...a magnet is attached to the back side of the clothespin.  This craft is ideal for the first meeting since it is easy to make plus it can be used to hold your Brownie Welcome note!
We made these owls in many different colours...with and without the glitter.

This next felt craft was found online by former Musical Owl Maggie {Hi Maggie!}. Maggie and members of her family had precut the patterns for us and generously donated all the supplies which was greatly appreciated! The Brownies had no problem sewing this craft!
Go to this link for a similar owl pattern.

I created this next craft two years ago when I had switched back to being a Guide Guider.  I had intended to make this craft with my Guides to use as a memory keeper but I did not have enough coffee tins for the entire group {I am still saving these tins lol}.  So, I ended up using it to hold the names for our weekly prize draw.

This felt Halloween Witch pencil topper was fun to make!
The idea was found in Canadian Living Magazine Nov 06
page 307.
{I have the directions if you are interested}
The Brownies made these at our Halloween Party...I had pre made the hats though.
Felt is sometimes a bit tricky to glue but if you put enough glue on your project and hold it in place for a few minutes then the glue will adhere.  I find that Aleene's Tacky Glue works great!

This felt poppy is ideal for Remembrance Day.  One of the former Owls {not sure if it was White Owl or Fire Owl} prepared this craft.  It is two pieces of red felt stitched together...with a black center and a safety pin  attached to the back of the poppy.  The Brownies wore these on their badge sash at the Remembrance Day Parade.

I created this felt back pack with bedroll hat craft in my early years of Guiding...looks a little mangled now LOL.  No pinterest back then!  If we needed a craft idea it had to come from our own imagination, from a friend, Leader training  or craft magazine! LOL...I sooo love Pinterest..there are so many awesome ideas on there!

This cute sleeping bag hat craft was found online somewhere...can't remember where! I prepared this craft for our District Camp a few years ago.  It involves sewing and gluing.  The doll body is a mini popsicle stick. I laminated the "Did you Hear That?" tag with packing tape to help protect it from rain...and we all know what rain can do to a hat craft!

I created this mini drawstring bag hat craft for something...can't remember lol. It is simple to make...just cut a circle and sew around the edge with yarn...then cinch it together.

I may have gotten the bag idea from the following craft...

This craft is really cute and easy to make!  It is a felt drawstring tic tac toe game.  {again, not sure where I found this idea! sorry!}  The bag opens up to reveal a tic tac toe game and adorable little bees and ladybugs are used as the playing pieces {you could add eyes and antenae to the playing pieces}.
The grid is drawn on with fabric paint. The edge is sewn with yarn {make sure you space the stitches evenly}.  The insects are made with pom poms.  The bee is a yellow pom pom with a black pipe cleaner wrapped around it.  When you are finished playing tic tac toe just draw the string until it forms a pouch and store the playing pieces inside.  {you could probably use anything you like as the playing pieces}.

This Palm tree hat craft idea was found in Canadian Guider magazine March/April 1998 page 37.

I had prepared this craft for our summer camp, Camp Castaway, when I was a Guider in Saskatoon.

The base is made with felt. Really cute for our Castaway themed camp!

I have the instructions if anyone is interested.

Campfire hat craft...I think it lost some of it's kindling over the years!  I had prepared this craft for a District Sleepover...for about 100 kids.  It was inexpensive and self explanatory which is great when working with a large group.

This felt flower kit was purchased in Saskatoon back in the late 90's.  Not sure where I got it exactly.  I'm not sure if it would appeal to kids now but at the time it was a cute craft.  I am amazed that I still have the precut pattern pieces!  Can you say HOARDER ! LOL  If you are interested in the directions leave a message.

I had made a felt Wall hanging for Brownies at one time but it is no where to be found.  If I find anymore felt craft ideas then I will be sure to do another post!
I hope at least one of these ideas appeals to some of you!  Enjoy the rest of your day!

Guides Halloween Craft

About five years ago I bought this Halloween craft at a yardsale.  {It was $1.00 and too cute to pass up}.  I thought it would be fun to make at Girl Guides but at that time I was Brown Owl for Brownies...and this craft would be a little too difficult for Brownie aged girls to make.  So, now that I am a Guide Guider again I thought that we could tackle this craft. {For those of you who follow my blog know that I am trying to downsize my craft room and had half the suppies needed for this craft already!}  I had just enough orange fabric left over from a sewing project many years ago...and I already had three bags of the stuffing that I had picked up at a yardsale ...I  had the burlap out in my garden shed... enough 2L pop bottles on their way to the recycle depot...had the needles and thread...and lots of plastic spiders/bats that my sister had sent from Edmonton for the Guides last Fall.  I had to purchase some stuff though:  nylons for the face and hands, black felt for the hat and eyes, black fabric for the cape, broom supplies, craft fur for the hair, hot glue sticks, and a wooden base.  Hubby came home from work with free plywood for the base and he had cut it into 6x6 squares for us {woo hoo!}.
I had decided to do some prep work first since we always run out of time at our meetings.  I stuffed and attached the nylon heads to the 2L pop bottle and precut the orange dress...then I used my sewing machine to partially sew the dress.  {This craft took two meetings to complete}.  The first meeting we allowed 45 minutes for the girls to work on their Witch.  They had to sew a gathering stitch around the top of the dress so that it would stay on the body, stitch a face and paint the wood base black.
They did not get as much done the first night as I had anticipated since alot of gabbing was going on...but that's part of the fun right! So I ended up making the craft into a Kit so  they could have fun assembling it.  {I had two weeks to prep for this so I did it while watching TV}.It would have taken atleast four meetings to do this all on their own! {and they do not like sewing!}

For the second meeting I still had to find something to use for the hair.  I went to a fabric store and the faux craft fur was mucho expensive so I decided to just use yarn for the hair ...until...I was lurking around the Dollarama in the Halloween aisle and noticed some Monkey masks that had fur that would make perfect Witch's hair!  Problem solved!  I precut the hair, the cape {which I then made a drawstring pull so that they just had to tie it on their Witch}, made the arms so that they could just safety pin them to the dress, made the hats from black sparkly felt, made the burlap bags, and used a real broom and dowels to make the mini brooms.

The Guides had fun assembling their Witch...and used their own creativity to personalize their craft even though it ended up being a kit.

Here are some of their adorable creations!

This last one I had made for one of our Guiders...but ran out of the orange fabric so I used black for the dress and used fabric from a dollarama costume to make the cape.  I used google eyes on this one not the black felt.  It turned out great!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

1 Cat, 1 Cowgirl, 1 Scientist, 1 Pirate, 1 Angel.

For Crafts: Brownies decorated a treat bag, did a 3D pumpkin
and a fun foam frame. The Sparks coloured in wooden Halloween
shapes and did a fun foam Scarecrow.  The Guides decorated a
treat bag, a mini Owl treat box, and a fun foam scarecrow.
I did not get photos of all the crafts but I managed to get a few.

Thankyou to all the Leaders and Parents whom had donated treats!
{I didn't get a photo of the Guides/Sparks treat tables but they were
just as yummy looking as the Brownies Treat table}.   The girls
all took pride in their awesome costumes! It is such a treat just
to see the costumes the kids come up with...and there are

Brownie Dues & Attendance...and Crafts

Wise Owl Lori-Anne found this neat
little pink toy holder at Frenchy's and
thought it would be perfect for organizing
the Brownies' Dues each week.

Cookie Owl worked her amazing magic
and made up this cute little system. Each pouch is
labelled with the Brownies' name.  Laminated Owl cards
are provided and are placed inside the pouch
to signify  attendance for that week.
As the girls arrive they put in an owl card and
their $1 dues.  This is a great way to keep track of
the dues and attendance ...and cuts out on the
weekly question and response... "Owl, Owl, Where do I put
my dues? "..."Just keep it in your pocket until we are ready".
Now they know the routine!

Cookie Owl made up these
cute litte name tags for the Brownies
using GGC Clipart.  We collect the name tags
at the end of the night...put them in a gift bag
...then randomly pick out a tag to determine
the weekly prize draw winner.  When a Brownie wears her
uniform, pays the dues, and is well behaved that night
she has a chance to win a prize.  We have a treasure
box full of prizes that were either picked up at yardsales
or the dollarama or donated by my sister Michele.
A great way to encourage the Brownies to
wear their uniform, pay dues, behave well, and
 leave their name tag behind!

Cookie Owl did a cute little SPIDER craft this week

It's getting close to HALLOWEEN
...next week will be our Halloween Party.
Since Halloween is on a Monday night
this year we will not have a meeting that week.

Yes...the Owls get to do CRAFTS
too! We like to have fun!

This is the craft idea White Owl provided for Thanksgiving.
Little turkeys...some were grey some where brown.
The Brownies loved making these...and made them
with ease from dollarama craft clay.  They formed
the body, added the eyes, feathers, feet and
waddle thingy.  So adorable!  Thanks White Owl!
