South Africa Promise & Law mini books

Hello...Happy Spring!  It is officially Spring here in this part of the world... but it doesn't feel like it.  March 21st, the second day of Spring, was a snow day for the school kids...no school because of the snow and ice pellets.   Hopefully, the weather will warm up and the snow will go...but we've got at least another month or so for that to happen in this part of Canada. Anyhoo, enough about the weather.

I thought I would share with you another set of mini promise books. This time they are for...
South Africa

{Shout out to Melinda L  and the 1st Bergvliet Brownie Pack in Cape Town, South Africa for inspiring this set of mini books !}

South Africa Girl Guides Brownie Promise & Law, Guide Promise, and Teddies Promise mini books

These mini books may be helpful to the South Africa Girl Guides and also to Girl Guides in Canada and other WAGGGS members around the world.  {In my last post, I wrote about how my Guides were learning about the promise and laws from other WAGGGS member countries}.

The Five World Centres and Song

Hello Owl & Toadstool viewers!
 Did you know that there is a Fifth World Centre?
Yes, there is a fifth World Centre in Africa called Kusafiri.
The Fifth World Centre in Africa
"Kusafiri World Centre is a project exploring how WAGGGS can bring a World Centre experience using existing facilities in Africa. The ‘centre’ has no fixed site but changes location at every event, creating international experiences to girls and young women in different countries in Africa".

This fifth World Centre was established in 2010 and in October 2015 was officially named Kusafiri. Kusafiri means 'to journey' in Swahili.  For more information on how Kusafiri World Centre came to be see the above link.

I will need to change the name of my song "The Four World Centres"  to "The Five World Centres" to include Kusafiri.  What rhymes with Kusafiri...hmmm...LOL...I will come up with something.  I am not sure how to pronounce Kusafiri either...is it Ku-sa-furry or Ku-sa-feary??

Action Song:  THE FOUR WORLD CENTRES
by Guider Lee Ann

*chorus*
Who knows about the four World Centres?
Who knows about the four World Centres?

I've just updated the song and it sounds like this...
(the tune is a bit like Boa Constrictor}

The Five World Centres
{lyrics by Lee Ann Fraser 2016}

*Chorus*
Who knows ABOUT the Five World Centres?
Who knows ABOUT the Five World Centres?
Who Knows ABOUT the Five World Centres?

(All the Girl Guides do-oo-oo is sung slower and "do" is a longer note.
 I do not know anything about writing lyrics or composing music so bare with me)

Af-ri-ca has Ku-sa-fi-ri,
Af-ri-ca has Ku-sa-fi-ri,
Af-ri-ca has Ku-safi-ri.

(action for the new last verse is to alternately slap your hands on your thighs
left-right-left-right to the beat to symbolize African drumming}

my homemade song go to my original post

WAGGGS Regions/World Centre minibooks

Hello Guiders and Owls...
Some of you are wondering about the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Regions, aka WAGGGS Regions.

There are 10 million members of WAGGGS  in 145 countries around the world.  The countries are located in five regions.

The five WAGGGS Regions are:
Africa Arab Asia Pacific Europe Western Hemisphere

This map shows the regions by colour.

image source

Go here to learn more about the Regions and how they work. Go here to access a drop down menu to find detailed information about the WAGGGS Member Organizations {145 countries listed}.

Recently I had edited my Four World Centres minibook to make it usable by all WAGGGS Regions. I use this minibook as a passport for a World Thinking Day meeting activity. {I made coordinating posters that I place around the meeting space as a round robin style meeting}.

The first photo is my original World Centres minibook which has the CWFF page, Pax Lodge, Our Chalet, Sangam, Our Cabana, and WAGGGS page {plus the front and back covers}.
The remaining minibook photos show the regional logos in place of the Canadian World Friendship Fund page.  If you find this minibook activity useful then let me know and I will send you the pdf.

I did a google search for WAGGGS Region logo images and found these: {I could not find a detailed logo for Arab Region nor Europe Region...and could not find a colour coded logo for Asia Pacific Region...so if you happen to find them please leave a comment}.

Note: There is a fifth World Centre Pilot project that
could potentially lead to a fifth World Centre in Africa.
Check out this WAGGGS page for more details.

"The project will be evaluated, with results and
recommendations presented at the
35th World Conference in Hong Kong in 2014".

Have a great day!
Thanks for visiting Owl & Toadstool

Update 10 March 2014:
I now have the colour logo for the Asia Pacific Region thanks to Carol B. for sending a link!  I also made mini-books with coloured logos for the Western Hemisphere Region and Africa Region.  If you would like to request these files just send me an email {see my profile} and state which version you would like; the detailed logo , the coloured logo, no logo, CWFF version {or all versions}.

This version would be good if you have the Region stickers from the WAGGGS shop!

4 World Centres Western Hemisphere minibook

Happy World Thinking Day!  I know....I did not get around to doing my Thinking Day post.  Time {and colds and family} has a way of sneaking up on us doesn't it?  So I thought I would atleast post something.  Hopefully, some of you will be able to use this in the future.  I edited my 4 World Centres minibook to make it usable by all WAGGGS Western Hemisphere countries, not just Canada.  So here it is, kinda late!

The above version is the result from an email with New Zealand Guider, Anna. {Hi Anna!...it is amazing that I get to converse with Guiders from all over the world because of this Blog!} Anna liked the original version of my minibook but inquired about changing it to suit her country.  It was simple to change so I had offered to do the edit.  Anna had sent me an image to replace my Canadian content...CWFF page...and this is the result...an Asia Pacific Region version.  I aim to make one for each WAGGGS region.

Well, that's all for today my friends.  Happy World Thinking Day to all 10 million of you! Wow that's alot of members!  Have a fun day Saturday!

Girlguiding UK new Promise - Mini books

Source
A new Promise for Girlguiding UK will take effect as of September 1, 2013.

The new Promise reads:

I promise that I will do my best:
To be true to myself and develop my beliefs,
To serve the Queen and my community,
To help other people
and
To keep the (Brownie) Guide Law.

"the words ‘to be true to myself and develop my beliefs’ will replace ‘to love my God’, and the words ‘to serve the Queen and my community’ will replace ‘to serve the Queen and my country’." Source

"Over the past 100 years the Promise has changed a total of 11 times before this consultation. These changes have occurred to reflect the views of our members and the changing attitudes within our society". Source

I created a few mini books for the new UK promise... very similar to the mini books that I had made for Canada and Australia. These Promise books are handy for teaching our Girl Guides about Guiding around the world.

Update: 12 Sept. 2013:  It has been brought to my attention that the new UK Brownie Promise should read "and to keep the Brownie Guide Law".  My original minibook has "and to keep the Brownie Law" so I made the changes to include Guide.  I have the updated file if you would like to request that version. Sorry for any inconvenience!
Updated version with the correction "and to keep the Brownie Guide Law"

Wondering how to fold these mini books?
I found this on pinterest...original source unknown..sorry!

The new UK Rainbow Promise
as of September 01, 2013

I promise that
I will do my best to
think about my beliefs
and to be kind and helpful.

{This mini book folds card style}

 The Girlguiding UK website has separate websites for it's youth members...Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Senior Section... with games, activities, and other online info so check it out!

If you would like to use my minibooks please leave a comment or email {my address is in my profile}and I will happily send you the files.  Thanks!

Anne Challenge Lapbook

Hello Kindred Spirits!  It has been a couple of weeks since my last post!  Today I want to share with you this Lapbook that we had made a couple of years ago. {You may have already viewed some of these pics on my website "Lee Ann's Girl Guide Notebook"}. We did the Anne of Green Gables Challenge with the Guides, Brownies, and Sparks over the course of three meetings; two meetings for learning about Anne and preparing for a recital...and the last meeting was a Recital.  We had Service Learning students from St FX University come in to lead the Challenge as part of their course requirements.  One of the challenge activites was to make some sort of scrapbook {a fitting activity since Lucy Maude Montgomery was a HUGE scrapbooker}.   I thought this Lapbook would be an inexpensive and fun way to incorporate that element into the challenge.

The colourful paper flowers came from the Dollarama store.  The Anne colouring page came from Annetoon website...I can not seem to find the page where I got the writing though.

This view shows the back cover of the Lapbook...a few colouring pages and a wordsearch that I had created especially for the Anne of Green Gables Lapbook were attached to the back.

The inside view shows a Layered minibook for images related to Anne of Green Gables {images were found on Google search for Anne of Green Gables images}...images from Imagining Anne The Island Scrapbooks of L.M. Montgomery showing the popular "Puffed Sleeves" fashion...more Annetoon clipart...a folded double pocket...green cardstock to add support to the folder...two oval frames to add photos...stickers that I had in my stash from years ago...a homemade laminated Anne bookmark...a printout of the challenge patch...and gold photocorners that I had in my stash.

This is the Invitation that the Brownies had made for the Recital.  I found this idea in The Anne of Green Gables Christmas Treasury {I no longer have this book but I am almost certain that is where I found the idea}
Inside view of the Invitation
This is a craft idea that I had created...mini straw hat...ribbon...yarn braids...safety pin...white glue. So simple!  After I had thought of this idea I later learned that similar magnets and life sized hats with braids were for sale at the Anne of Green Gables gift shops!  Darn, I could have been rich with this idea LOL oh well LOL {I wish!}.
This is the Challenge patch...100 YEARS OF ANNE...I do not see it for sale on the online GGC store so I guess they are no longer available.  Does anyone out there know if this challenge patch is still available for GGC Units to purchase?

This was a fun and entertaining challenge!  A few of the girls came dressed in Anne costume which was a treat to see!  We invited the parents to attend the Recital.  The Guides were responsible for making a "Program" for the recital...which included a poem recitation , dancing, a skit, singing, lapbook display, food, and of course Raspberry Cordial {not the real raspberry cordial but a similar type punch...the real stuff is amazing! you can purchase it in PEI}.  Cookie Owl had made several Victorian Sachets for the girls and a delicious cake!  The Guides did an awesome rendition of a scene from the book.  The Sparks shared a waltz and the Brownies shared the friendship dance.  It was a pleasant evening for all!

Have a most perfectly splendid day!
