Guiding and Scouting Printables

Hello friends!
Thought I would share with you a very useful and fun site called
This site provides parents, teachers, and group leaders with free activities for kids.  They have printables, colouring, puzzles, crafts, holidays, topics, games, and a new shop.  Under the tab "topics", they have a Scouting and Guiding section.  Many of you may have seen some of their  activities on Pinterest, such as this one, "Learn How to Draw Robert Baden-Powell".

A while ago, I had pinned this drawing sheet to my Pinterest board "Crafty Girl Guides" for future reference.  I did not venture onto the original site until today after reading an email from UK Guider Owl Gayle {Hi Gayle!}.  Gayle had used the BP drawing sheets as part of her Baden-Powell meeting with her Brownies and had sent me the link.  So today I checked out the original site. Here are some of the pages that I had found! {I combined the files for display purpose on this blog...they are available for individual PDF download on Activity Village}.

There are other Baden-Powell worksheets available for download there too.
These activities would be fun to include in Lapbooks.

The site also has information on Robert, Agnes,  and Olave Baden-Powell, and has Thinking Day activities so please check out Activity Village for yourself.  You may never know what you will find useful for Guiding!

Hope you are all enjoying your Summer so far.  The weather has been a bit on the cool side here in Atlantic Canada but this week it is warming up !  Have a nice day!

4 World Centres Western Hemisphere minibook

Happy World Thinking Day!  I know....I did not get around to doing my Thinking Day post.  Time {and colds and family} has a way of sneaking up on us doesn't it?  So I thought I would atleast post something.  Hopefully, some of you will be able to use this in the future.  I edited my 4 World Centres minibook to make it usable by all WAGGGS Western Hemisphere countries, not just Canada.  So here it is, kinda late!

The above version is the result from an email with New Zealand Guider, Anna. {Hi Anna!...it is amazing that I get to converse with Guiders from all over the world because of this Blog!} Anna liked the original version of my minibook but inquired about changing it to suit her country.  It was simple to change so I had offered to do the edit.  Anna had sent me an image to replace my Canadian content...CWFF page...and this is the result...an Asia Pacific Region version.  I aim to make one for each WAGGGS region.

Well, that's all for today my friends.  Happy World Thinking Day to all 10 million of you! Wow that's alot of members!  Have a fun day Saturday!

Brownies: Aboriginal Badge Lapbook

Since we are fast approaching National Aboriginal Day in Canada {21 June} I thought a post featuring a Lapbook that I had made with my former Brownies would be fitting. You may have already viewed a couple of these pics on my website two years ago but I have added the details in this post. This lapbook covers a portion of the requirements for the Brownies' Aboriginal People in Canada badge.

"In cooperation with national Aboriginal organizations, the Government of Canada designated June 21 National Aboriginal Day. This date was chosen because it corresponds to the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and because for generations, many Aboriginal groups have celebrated their culture and heritage at this time of year." Source

This is a single folder lapbook that took one meeting to complete {including game time}.  Quick and easy for Brownie age!  I added  cardstock to the cover which has a colouring page ..the title is hand printed...and the badge image is from the Brownie program book.
Inside flap {which is part of the cardstock that was glued to the cover}... top left corner... is a pic of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell visiting the Sarcee Reserve in Alberta...flicker image.
The pink square says Aboriginal People in Canada...which flips up to reveal the Aboriginal people in Canada...
Inuit/Métis/First Nations.

Bottom left corner of the lapbook shows a yellow pocket card holding a couple of activities...one activity is Aboriginal invention/contribution cards...and the other an Inuit song.  I have the file for these if anyone is interested but the original Source is no longer available.
I think I got this song at a 2003 Guider Conference training session...the name says Diane Kannegieter Chilliwack BC... so Diane if you are reading this Thanks!
The layered book {using 3 different coloured papers} holds various pictures of Aboriginal culture.  There are tons of images available if you do a google search.
These are the images that I chose for the layered book.

We played an Inuit blanket toss game which was really fun! It requires blankets and items such as a stuffed animal or a Guide Doll to toss...there are two or three teams each with a blanket {4 members per team to hold a corner of the blanket}then they toss the doll from blanket to blanket.
The pink envelope holds pieces of a paper puzzle that forms into an Inuksuk {I've seen it spelled Inuksuk and Inukshuk}. I used part of this image on the cover.  Go here for printable.

The center of the lapbook has yellow cardstock...I always attach cardstock to the center of the folders for extra support.  The banner, "Share in the Celebration" is a free bookmark that was found online.

The five neon coloured squares {a notepad from Dollarama} show Aboriginal symbols which flip up to reveal their meaning.  {If I can find the source of these images I will update the post}

Then I added the lyrics to "Land of the Silver Birch" {the yellow fan folded paper} which all the girls enjoyed singing.
The right inside flap of the Lapbook shows a West Coast Totem Pole colouring page, which was cut and pasted after it was coloured. This file is available upon request.

This page came from a colouring book...but I did not find any copyright info...just the name "I'm Proud to Call CANADA My Home...History of Canada Colouring Book"...with the Home Hardware store logo.{I got this at a yardsale years ago}.
Below is the back cover of the Lapbook...with a fun colouring activity...Go here for printable.

I found that it was best to tell the Brownies about each item as it was being passed to them...then they glued it into their Lapbook.  They were shown where to glue each item so that all the pieces would fit in the lapbook.  The colouring was done at the end since that took the most time.  This was a quick and easy Lapbook to do with Brownie aged girls. This Lapbook can easily be adapted to suit Guide age girls.

 Educational and fun to make!

HAPPY ABORIGINAL DAY CANADA!

Here is a sample of a Dream Catcher hat craft that I had made a few years ago...from a 4L water jug ring and yarn/feathers/bead.  We did not make this at Brownies but thought I would post it here anyway.

International Uniform Colouring Page

Hey there Guiders! Just a quick post...this is the colouring page that I had used in my Girl Guide World Guiding Lapbook.  For a while I could not remember where I had found this resource...then yesterday, while I was looking through my Girl Guide stuff for something else, I found it! That is the way it works right?!  Anyhoo...just thought I would post the page with it's source.

The Guide Programme Revised Edition 1985 {girls book}

I copied the Uniforms and Colour Key and converted it to pdf...I printed it on 11x17 paper for the lapbooks.  The pieces of the uniforms are numbered so it is easier to see the numbers and to colour it if it is printed on a larger sized paper. If you would like the pdf just send me an email or leave a comment.

Anne Challenge Lapbook

Hello Kindred Spirits!  It has been a couple of weeks since my last post!  Today I want to share with you this Lapbook that we had made a couple of years ago. {You may have already viewed some of these pics on my website "Lee Ann's Girl Guide Notebook"}. We did the Anne of Green Gables Challenge with the Guides, Brownies, and Sparks over the course of three meetings; two meetings for learning about Anne and preparing for a recital...and the last meeting was a Recital.  We had Service Learning students from St FX University come in to lead the Challenge as part of their course requirements.  One of the challenge activites was to make some sort of scrapbook {a fitting activity since Lucy Maude Montgomery was a HUGE scrapbooker}.   I thought this Lapbook would be an inexpensive and fun way to incorporate that element into the challenge.

The colourful paper flowers came from the Dollarama store.  The Anne colouring page came from Annetoon website...I can not seem to find the page where I got the writing though.

This view shows the back cover of the Lapbook...a few colouring pages and a wordsearch that I had created especially for the Anne of Green Gables Lapbook were attached to the back.

The inside view shows a Layered minibook for images related to Anne of Green Gables {images were found on Google search for Anne of Green Gables images}...images from Imagining Anne The Island Scrapbooks of L.M. Montgomery showing the popular "Puffed Sleeves" fashion...more Annetoon clipart...a folded double pocket...green cardstock to add support to the folder...two oval frames to add photos...stickers that I had in my stash from years ago...a homemade laminated Anne bookmark...a printout of the challenge patch...and gold photocorners that I had in my stash.

This is the Invitation that the Brownies had made for the Recital.  I found this idea in The Anne of Green Gables Christmas Treasury {I no longer have this book but I am almost certain that is where I found the idea}
Inside view of the Invitation
This is a craft idea that I had created...mini straw hat...ribbon...yarn braids...safety pin...white glue. So simple!  After I had thought of this idea I later learned that similar magnets and life sized hats with braids were for sale at the Anne of Green Gables gift shops!  Darn, I could have been rich with this idea LOL oh well LOL {I wish!}.
This is the Challenge patch...100 YEARS OF ANNE...I do not see it for sale on the online GGC store so I guess they are no longer available.  Does anyone out there know if this challenge patch is still available for GGC Units to purchase?

This was a fun and entertaining challenge!  A few of the girls came dressed in Anne costume which was a treat to see!  We invited the parents to attend the Recital.  The Guides were responsible for making a "Program" for the recital...which included a poem recitation , dancing, a skit, singing, lapbook display, food, and of course Raspberry Cordial {not the real raspberry cordial but a similar type punch...the real stuff is amazing! you can purchase it in PEI}.  Cookie Owl had made several Victorian Sachets for the girls and a delicious cake!  The Guides did an awesome rendition of a scene from the book.  The Sparks shared a waltz and the Brownies shared the friendship dance.  It was a pleasant evening for all!

Astronomy Lapbook

Hello Sisters in Guiding!
Happy Belated Easter...
It turned out to be a beautiful weekend here.

A few years ago, when I was Brown Owl, I made up a Brownies' Exploring Space Badge Lapbook.  This was the very first Lapbook project that I had made with my former Brownies.  You may have already viewed this a few years ago on my website "Lee Ann's Girl Guide Notebook" but here I offer the details {I will attempt to add the links for the resources that I had used in this lapbook}.  We allowed two meetings to complete this double lapbook...and everything was precut.  {This Lapbook could easily be adapted to suit the Guide's Astronomy Badge}.

Front Cover:  I found this "Best Work On Earth" printable from a book called Pats and Praises 143 Reproducible Patterns to Build Self Esteem in the Classroom. Written and illustrated by Mary Strohl and Susan Schneck. Copyright 1990 by Scholastic.  We added the Exploring Space badge image to the sun...and also, not shown,  added the girl's photo to the Astronaut to personalize it.  We then painted the cover with blue glitter and stars paint.  This lapbook was made using old file folders...keep in mind that when making lapbooks it is ok to use different style/coloured folders.  If doing a double lapbook and one folder is slightly larger then you can just easily trim it to fit.

Inside View 1 above photo:  Top left corner we have the different types of Galaxies painted with the glitter paint {I can not find the link for this}...and below that we have "Your Universe Address" {this i made in microsoft word...Name:__, Street:__, Town:__, Province:__, Country:__, Continent:__, Planet:__, Solar System, Location in Galaxy:Orion's Arm, Galaxy: Milky Way, Local Group, Local Super Cluster: Virgo, and Universe}.  The yellow square {I used one page of a caterpillar book} unfolds into an area for drawing...below that is a black area for making constellations with star stickers {or a light coloured gel pen would work}.  The layered booklet is for adding facts and photos {Roberta Bondar, Phases of the moon, Canadarm I,II, Dexter, CSA, ISS images, Chart of your age on the planets}.  The top right corner {which is actually the back flap of the lapbook} has 'Stargazing Rules" which unfolds...below that is a blank globe {from Pats and Praises} for notes or drawing... and below that we have other Stargazing hints from Canadian Guider Magazine {Looks like March/April 1995 ...I do not have that issue but the photocopy looks like mar/apr 95}.  The shuttle, globe, "keep moving forward" and "get ready to take off!" images are from Pats and Praises.

Inside View 2 above photo:  To the left we have "Blast Off to Success" from Pats and Praises. As the girls completed a section of the Exploring Space badge they got a star sticker and moved the Shuttle along the string closer to "success".  The banner "Astronomy 2009" was taken from a free poster "Canadian Skies" {they offer other freebies there too!} for the International Year of Astronomy {even though we made this lapbook in 2010 I had mentioned to the girls the fact that the previous year was the International Year of Astronomy...better late then never!}.  Also on that page we have areas for making constellations/asterisms with stickers...and a free printable "My Solar System" mini book {we added stickers of the planets inside}. I'll explain the right side of the second folder next since it is more visible in the below photo...

Inside View 3 above photo: Starting with the green double pocket...this is used to hold a Star Light Poem , extra star stickers, a paper that lists a few cool astronomy sites which I will list at the end of this post, a starfinder {fortune teller activity}, and a song: tune BINGO...
We all live on this great big planet
and Earth is it's name-o
 E-A-R-T-H
E-A-R-T-H
E-A-R-T-H
and Earth is it's name-o
{Repeat but this time replace letter E with a clap...then continue along replacing each letter with a clap until all letters are replaced with a clap}.

Above the green pocket is a compass drawing that I made in Word.  The girls had to label the compass points...and got a star sticker when completed.
  The dot-to-dot constellations were photocopied from a little activity book that I can no longer find in my stuff but I still have the photocopies...dot-to-dots for Scorpio, Sagittarius, Leo, Canis Major, and Orion stapled into a booklet.  The orange paper is just a fan folded blank page for notes or drawings.  The "get into orbit" and "Keep Shining Brightly" images are from Pats and Praises.  The pink paper is just five note pages stapled into a mini book with constellation  patterns inside. The folded page below that booklet is a page of the night sky...but I do not have a source for that photocopy. {I took all these photos in 2010 and just noticed that I did not get a pic of that page unfolded}.

This view shows the yellow page ,Caterpillar fold unfolded,  for drawing a picture to go along with one of the many legends about the stars. Also, the inside of the Solar System mini book with stickers.

This lapbook combines both Brownie Program, "Reach for the Stars", and the "Exploring Space" Badge.  You will notice that there are activities in this lapbook that are not listed in the Brownie program/badge work but I added extra stuff anyway.  The amount of detail that you want to get into depends on the group of girls and the amount of time you have.

I've done this badge with both Guides and Brownies a few times over the years. Here are some games that we had played ...
  • Constellation Tag {same as regular tag but they have to say the name of a constellation to get "unfrozen"}
  • Stars Alive {use flashlights...they get into groups of 5 or 6 and they have to project their lights on the ceiling forming a constellation ...you could place markers on the floor then have the girls stand on them and then project their flashlights on the ceiling}.
  • Jeopardy {This is better for the Guide age}
  • Fruit Salad {use the names of the planets/constellations etc for group names}
  Go to this post for more Brownies' Exploring Space Badge activities.

I have a binder of resources that I had collected over the years.  If you are a Guider looking for something for badge work maybe I can help.

Canadian Guiding Lapbook

Canadian Guiding Badge

Here is the continuation of the World Guiding Lapbook.  A second folder was added to the original World Guiding lapbook to make room for Canadian Guiding badge work.  It mostly covers the part about finding 10 facts about Canadian Girl Guides history. {However, World and Canadian content spills through both sides of  the lapbook}

 World Guiding and Canadian Guiding
Badges Lapbook

Ten facts about GGC in pictures!
Lady Baden-Powell facts Wheel
You can see I added pictures on coloured paper {sticky notes from Dollarama...in neon colours, which I must say are back from the 80's!} and created peek-a-boo facts underneath.  This allows room for more pictures.

The front cover
I had a bunch of these stickers left over from 2010.  They were issued to GGC Units for the 100th Anniversary!  They add lots of colour and can also describe things that we do in Girl Guides. {You can see a pocket was created...purely by accident..that is the beauty of lapbooks, they all turn out differently!}
  Lapbooking is an activity that offers learning in a fun and creative way!  The girls get a Girl Guide History lesson but they see it as crafting!
